2000-PRESENT

KENNETH A. POORMON - TROOP F - MAY 31, 2000

Tpr. Kenneth A. Poormon, 23, was killed May 31, 2000, in a traffic accident. Tpr. Poormon and his partner, Tpr. Truscott M. Kelly, were chasing a violator when their troop car was struck by a tractor trailer.

At the time of his death, Tpr. Poormon was assigned to SP Kingston. He was a one-year veteran of the State Police.


TRUSCOTT KELLY - TROOP F - MAY 31, 2000

Tpr. Truscott M. Kelly, 49, was killed May 31, 2000, in a traffic accident. Tpr. Kelly and his partner, Tpr. Kenneth A. Poormon, were chasing a violator when their troop car was struck by a tractor trailer.

At the time of his death, Tpr. Kelly was assigned to SP Kingston. He was a 22-year veteran of the State Police.


LAWRENCE P. GLEASON - TROOP B - FEBRUARY 11, 2002

Tpr. Lawrence P. Gleason was killed, Feb. 11, 2002, while responding to a complaint by a 36-year-old Crown Point (Essex County) woman, who had called SP Westport to report her former boyfriend had menaced her with a knife at her home, then had left the scene.

Investigation determined that Tpr. Gleason had been taking a deposition from the woman in the living room of her home when the ex-boyfriend drove into the driveway, took a .30-30 rifle from his trunk and fired three shots into the building. One struck Tpr. Gleason in the back, penetrating his body armor and mortally wounding him. The shooter then entered the house, shot and killed the woman, and turned the rifle on himself.

Tpr. Gleason, 28, had entered Division service as a member of the 184th Academy Basic School session, graduating May 15, 2001.


ROBERT W. AMBROSE - TROOP T - DECEMBER 19, 2002

Trooper Robert W. Ambrose, 31, was killed on December 19, 2002, when his Troop Car was struck from behind by a vehicle on the New York State Thruway in the City of Yonkers.

Trooper Ambrose was investigating a property damage automobile accident when a speeding vehicle, being operated by a 20-year old intoxicated driver, lost control and struck the rear of his Troop Car. This caused the Troop Car to catch fire and resulted in Trooper Ambrose’s death. Also killed in the accident was the 20-year old intoxicated driver and a person from the original accident Trooper Ambrose had been investigating.

Trooper Ambrose was a five-year veteran of the State Police and had served in Troops K, F and T. He was assigned to SP Tarrytown at the time of his death.


JEFFRY T. EDELSON - TROOP F - NOVEMBER 23, 2003

Sgt. Jeffry T. Edelson, 34, was killed on November 23, 2003 on State Route 55 in the town of Liberty, Sullivan County when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree while he was attempting to enforce the Vehicle and Traffic Law pursuing a speeding vehicle.

Sergeant Edelson was a member of the 178th Academy Basic School Session, graduating on April 27, 1998. After the academy, except for a temporary assignment in Troop L, he spent the remainder of his 6 year career in Troop F. His final duty station was SP Liberty.


THOMAS M. O’NEILL - TROOP L - JULY 6, 2005

Senior Investigator Thomas M. O’Neill died at the age of 56 on July 6, 2005. Senior Investigator O’Neill suffered a fatal heart attack while arresting an individual at a local gas station in the Town of Islip.

Senior Investigator O’Neill began his law enforcement career with the Long Island State Parkway Police on January 13, 1972. On January 1, 1980, he joined the State Police as part of the Parkway Police merger and was assigned the rank of Technical Sergeant. In November 1984, he was appointed to Investigator and then to Senior Investigator in January of 1990.

Senior Investigator O’Neill was assigned to SP Brentwood at the time of his death.
